The new works of Chen are strikingly vibrant yet highly reminiscent of the 1960s minimalism paintings. The aesthetic of his work is a direct reflection of his dedication to traditional Chinese ink brush drawing and concentration on style.

Chen begins his method with the canvas on the studio floor. To create his subtle surfaces, he then layers the surface with vertical motions, working top down. This fastidious layering is what creates the resonant tonal hues in his paintings. The balance between his meditation, attraction to the abstract, and traditional training is what makes Chen’s work so unique.

On the occasion of her exhibition at Independent Art Projects, Shen Chen will lead an exhibition walkthrough, discuss what influences his work, what his working mode look like, and where he is heading next.

Shen Chen will also sign “Recent Paintings” exhibition catalogue.

Chen’s works, presented by CHYNTHIA-REEVES are on view at IAP through November 16, 2014.
