November 2014: artKamp indigo mass + Anne Morgan Spalter

North Adams, MA — Independent Art Projects is pleased to announce two new exhibitions opening on November 22, 2014: artKamp: indigo mass, a collaborative contemporary ceramic installation presented by Ferrin Contemporary, and Modern Renaissance, Anne Morgan Spalter’s recent photo-based art installations, presented by CYNTHIA-REEVES.

artKamp: indigo mass is an exhibition of selected works created during artKamp — a two-week international residency featuring eight artists working collaboratively to create a unified tablescape. Individual works by artKamp artists, which include Ben Carter, Chase Gamblin, Alexandra Jelleberg, Frances Palmer, Bonnie Smith, Mara Superior, Vipoo Srivilasa, and Elenor Wilson will also be on view.

In Modern Renaissance, Spalter creates a unique spatial experience by integrating printed and moving imagery, using both traditional photography, as well as computational tools. Continuing her exploration of the modern landscape and its relationship to landscape works of the past, Spalter combines aerial urbanscapes with video works based on Renaissance painting and cathedral imagery.

Several artKamp’s artists and Anne Morgan Spalter will be attending the opening reception, and guide the public through the exhibitions on Saturday, November 22, 5-7 PM.

Sin-ying Ho
by Anthony Merino

“Sin-ying Ho dissects the complexity of human identity in two semi-monumental vases: Temptation: Life of Goods No.1 and One World, Many Peoples No. 2 exhibited at Independent Art Projects, North Adams, MA. Across the surfaces of the two vases are human forms in silhouette floating amidst a field of flowers, mimicking traditional blue and white floral patterns found in traditional Chinese porcelain imports. Ho uses the silhouette device to suggest that humans are vessels and within them are their identities.

Renaissance painter Titian’s Fall of Man serves as the template for the figures on Ho’s Temptation. Titian’s painting depicts the moment Eve plucks the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Within the silhouettes are designs inspired by Chinese coins: a circle with a square hole cut in its center. Each circle includes a corporate logo. In the end, Ho asserts that humans largely identify themselves by what they consume. Thus, this work challenges viewers to ask themselves, do you define your purchases or do they define you?”

October 2014: IAP first venue of “Made in China” series

October 2014: IAP first venue of “Made in China” series

North Adams, MA — Independent Art Projects is pleased to be the first venue hosting Made in China: The New Export Ware, an on-going series of exhibitions and public programs featuring international contemporary ceramic artists re-contextualizing traditional Chinese export porcelain production methods and visual vocabulary, curated by Ferrin Contemporary’s Director Leslie Ferrin.

The exhibition opens at IAP on Saturday, October 18, with a conversation between curator Leslie Ferrin and artist Vipoo Srivilasa, 5-7 pm. The talk is free and open to the public, and will be followed by light Chinese refreshments.

Featured artists Robin BestCaroline Cheng, Sin-ying Ho, Paul Scott, Robert Silverman, and Vipoo Srivilasa are affiliated the old porcelain city of Jingdezhen and its Pottery Workshop factory in various contexts and channels. Jingdezhen is known as the “Porcelain Capital” because it has been producing quality pottery for 1700 years. The Pottery Workshop factory is an international ceramics center focusing on the development and enrichment of ceramics in China and abroad.

Sponsored as a guest lecturer by the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Ferrin traveled to China in June and July 2014 with the aim of gaining a greater understanding of the cross-cultural collaboration, production, and appropriation occurring in the New Export Ware movement. During her visit, Ferrin visited ceramic workshops in Jingdezhen and Chongqing, where — similar to the historical model of export ware — skilled Chinese artisans, produce contemporary works for Western markets under the direction of visiting Western artists.

Autumn 2014: Gallery Talk & Exhibition Opening

North Adams, MA – Independent Art Projects (IAP) celebrates the fall season with installations of New York-based, Chinese artist Shen Chen’s atmospheric paintings, and up-and-coming American artist Lauren Mabry’s abstract-painting-inspired ceramic vessels from Thursday, September 25 through Sunday, November 16, 2014.

With the concurrent installations of Chen and Mabry’s works —respectively presented by IAP co-founding galleries CYNTHIA-REEVES and Ferrin Contemporary—viewers are invited to explore the artists’ divergent, yet equally process-driven approaches to color and brushwork as means of non-representational communication.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 25, from 6 to 9 pm, in conjunction with downtown North Adams’ DownStreet Art festivities. The public is also invited to join artist Shen Chen on Saturday, October 4, at 3 pm for an artist talk.

BERKSHIRE WEEK, July 31, 2014
Independent Art Projects opens tonight

Ten years ago, a private, commercial art gallery downtown was just a pipe dream.

But one of the Steeple City’s newest exhibition spaces, Independent Art Project, aims to make that dream a reality.

In the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts’ Building 13, owners Leslie Ferrin and Cynthia Reeves have opened the gallery as a collaborative project.

The 2,500 square-foot exhibition space, under the direction of curator Martina Caruso, will hold its grand opening today at 1315 Mass MoCA Way, while Downstreet Art fills the downtown with gallery openings and performances.

Ferrin and Reeves are both accomplished art curators in their own right — Ferrin is the director of Ferrin Contemporary of Cummington and co-owned Ferrin Gallery on North Street in Pittsfield; Reeves, like Ferrin, is involved in art projects across the country.

They also graduated from Hampshire College together, Reeves said, and have remained close ever since.

“[Leslie] reached out to me when she became aware of the opportunity to lease space from Mass MoCA,” she said. “The fact that it’s right on the museum’s campus is meaningful to me, especially because of the kinship I feel between our programming and the mission and programming of Mass MoCA.”

The museum has a large amount of site-based installation, she said, and IAP does as well.

“With both of us presenting multiple projects simultaneously in various locations in the U.S. and abroad, our programs can feed one another,” Ferrin said. “Establishing a base in the Berkshires provides our collectors and art professionals a place to see the artwork we represent in a public context.
Our artists and collectors enjoy visiting the many outstanding visual arts venues in the cultural corridor during the summer and, increasingly, year round. It is our hope that we can expand our audience and provide an opportunity for established contemporary artists to show works in a gallery setting.”
Reeves expressed similar sentiments, and said she picked up on “a wonderful energy” around Mass MoCA.

“They’ve really done something phenomenal there,” she said. “My sense is it’s really coming into its own … More and more [artists] are coming [to New England] because it’s a nice place to live … To me, that’s really exciting.”

The gallery has displayed works spanning both Eastern and Western artworks during its first month — it opened as part of Downstreet Art on June 26 with art by Lianghong Feng, Sin-Ying Ho and Sergei Isupov.

“With both of our galleries representing artists who live, work and show internationally, there will always be subject or content expressed in the art they produce exploring issues of cross cultures,” Ferrin said. “Our exhibitions and works shown will change regularly. Martina Caruso is looking at curatorial themes for the future that help make connections between the artists and their audiences.”

From July 31, IAP will present work by artists Tanya Marcuse and Christopher Russell, Shuli Sadé, Steven Young Lee. Works by Ho will remain until Thanksgiving.

Born in Hong Kong, Ho emmigrated to Canada in the 1990s and is now based in New York City. She has returned to China many times, she said.

She was struck by how the country has changed, she said. Much of her art speaks to the accelerated commerce and increase in consumer culture in China.

Two seven-foot vessels will be on display in North Adams: “One World, Many People No. 2” and “Temptation: Life of Goods No. 2.” She completed both in several sections in her New York studio.

“Temptation” combines floral motifs with the shape of a human figure. Inside the human outline are small circles with a square in the middle, representing Chinese currency. Inside each circle are numerous international brand name logos — Coca Cola, Chanel and Disney, to name a few.

She said she has a particular interest in what these symbols mean to her and how they connect to today’s society.

June 2014: Independent Art Projects launches in North Adams

June 2014: Independent Art Projects launches in North Adams

Independent Art Projects launches in North Adams as the newest tenant in MASS MoCA’s commercial real estate program.

Contemporary art dealers Leslie Ferrin and Cynthia Reeves are delighted to announce the opening of Independent Art Projects, a 2,500 square-foot, multi-purpose project space in North Adams, MA. Newly renovated, the space is part of the MASS MoCA complex and its commercial real estate and economic development program.

We are excited to welcome IAP to the MASS MoCA Campus where they’ll join our vibrant community of artists, makers, and professionals working together to revitalize North Adams. All of our tenants play a vital role in supporting the museum’s mission –- all of the rental income directly supports our art programs and facilities,” Larry Smallwood, Deputy Director, COO at MASS MoCA said.

Directed by Martina Caruso, the space at 1315 MASS MoCA Way on the ground floor of building 13, in front of the main parking lot, and closest to Main Street, will feature works by mid-career and established artists represented by Ferrin Contemporary, Cynthia-Reeves, and other galleries based in New England and New York City. Work shown will include all media: sculpture, ceramic, painting, drawing, and print, as well as photography and video.

We couldn’t be more pleased with this fit,” Reeves said. “MASS MoCA is a dynamic institution with the warmest and most collaborative team, all working together to make their campus an epicenter for contemporary art in New England. Leslie Ferrin and I are delighted to be part of this dialog around contemporary art, each of us bringing our distinctive, international program to this wonderful site.

A native of Italy, Caruso moved to the United States in 2010 to attend the Berkshire Hills Internship Program and work for the cultural economic development of the City of North Adams. She collaborated with several New York City cultural institutions, including International Center of Photography, Steven Kasher Gallery, Aperture Foundation, and The Drawing Center.

Independent Art Projects provides the opportunity to share our current projects in the Berkshires,” Leslie Ferrin, who directs Ferrin Contemporary, explained. “We are happy to include North Adams as one of the ongoing venues where we feature our represented artists and curated exhibitions. With this location, we join a community of outstanding institutional neighbors in the growing cultural corridor that runs from New York to Vermont.

Independent Art Projects joins a growing number of recently opened regional visual art venues among them Jack Shainman’s newest venture The School, in Kinderhook, NY, and The Wassaic Project in Wassaic, NY, to the south, and Hall Art Foundation in Reading, VT, to the north.
